postheadericon Adoption Meet-n-Greet at PetsMart

This post is a little bittersweet. I took  Argos, Hammer, and Sophie to hang out at PetsMart today for the regular Greyhound adopt-a-thon and meet-n-greet. The dogs love it, the people love it, and it is great for socialization purposes. Oh, and someone might be interested in adopting, too. ;-) Not today, though. Kind of quiet at PetsMart. I was secretly thinking maybe we should just adopt Hammer. He is such a love. And hey… I can deal with being a “foster failure.”

Then I got home to a message from my rescue group. A family is very interested in adopting Hammer. They live 2.5 hours away. Hmmm. Stop and think. A little panic. Would I ever hear about him again? I called the family. Wow… could be a perfect fit – two dog-loving kids about my two dog-loving kids’ ages, flexible work/home schedules, and they have done their Greyhound research. We are meeting next week to see if Hammer is a good match. My rescue group says that “Greyhounds choose you,” so Hammer will be the center of all of this. For now, here are some photos from today.

  • We fostered Emmett, a hound mix, for 6 months. Nobody wanted him for the year he spent housed at the kennel and the one family who tried to take him returned him almost immediately. Before that he was a scrappy stray with zero manners who had to fight for all he had.

Nothing struck fear into our hearts more than when we got a call from an interested family around Christmas. We answered their inquiry with trepedation and, when they didn’t reply, we were relieved. Emmett was a bit of a troubled dog and we feared the wrong people would fail him entirely. We also realized in that moment that he was our family.

Emmett is our third failed foster. Two were from a previous generation of dogs and passed last year. I guess it’s only right to fail again. We have to keep the balance. lol.

I hope Hammer finds his best option and that everybody ends up happy in the end. Good luck to you both!

  • AboutVetMed:

Wow Kim – kudos to you for fostering/adopting Emmett! Lucky dog. We have really been spoiled with Hammer. Only 3-4 housebreaking incidences and that has been it. Oh, and today I caught him proudly walking around with a squeaker in his mouth that he had removed from a stuffie toy. (The first!) ;-) He is sweet and gentle and has just blended in so well.

I am hopeful though… I think he has the self-confidence to go forth and be adopted. Argos was more in his shell – he was ours from the start, not a foster – and I am not as confident that he would have made the transition as I think Hammer will be.

But I don’t know – I am a newbie at this! ack! I am eager to meet the prospective adopters – that is a good feeling.

  • You truly HAVE had it easy! Although, separation at the moment of adoption exchange is never easy no matter how angelic or demonic the dog. Still, after reading your description of Hammer. I’m sure he’s going to charm whoever he needs to.

For us, it’s the devil dogs who stay because nobody knows what to do with them. I put together a 6 minute video of the first six months we had Emmett. Watching it now, 2 months after we adopted him, I can’t believe how far he’s come! It makes me laugh to watch now. We deal with almost none of these issues anymore… almost.

I look forward to finding out what turn Hammer’s life takes next!
